IMPLEMENTATION OF THE GOALS FOR LIFE PROGRAM

Phase One Identifying Goals
The at-risk students, aided by the athlete, identify an obtainable goal to be achieved in a stipulated time period.

Phase Two Factors Preventing or Encouraging Goal Achievement
In this step, the athlete and students discuss factors which may prevent students from achieving their goals. Support factors which encourage goal achievement are also considered. Students and athlete review original goal, and if realistic, proceed to the following step.

Phase Three Outcomes
Students will begin to explore the possible outcomes as they strive to reach their goals. By responding appropriately to events in their lives, students will learn how to control their own outcomes. Discussions will take place as students actively participate in reaching their goals.

Phase Four Support Network
The schools, community, family and peers provide a valuable support network to youth participating in the Goals For Life program. The athlete expresses high expectations for his at-risk students and provides opportunities for active involvement. The community is essential in providing access to resources and involving youth in community service. Acknowledging the role of the family in promoting values and education results in a partnership which encourages supportive relationships with caring adults beyond the immediate family. Peers learn to appreciate the unique talents that each member brings to the group and bonding occurs.

Phase Five Game Plan
How the students and athlete plan to implement a strategy to achieve a goal occurs at this stage. The students will list specific steps to be accomplished so that the goal may be met. The more specific the plan, the better. The athlete ensures that the students understand the plan and that the plan contains no built-in obstacles.

Phase Six Evaluation
After goals are achieved, it is important to acknowledge and recognize the determination and perseverance of the youth. The students and the athlete will evaluate the goal and redesign as needed to ensure success. A successful participant in the Goals For Life program will show positive growth in all areas of his or her life.
